[Green Tech] China’s First Million-kW Unit Achieves 10% Biomass Co-Firing

Unit 2 of the Qingyuan Power Plant in south China's Guangdong Province has achieved a 10-percent biomass co-firing rate by energy ratio, becoming the first million-kW double-reheat power unit in China to reach the level and marking a breakthrough in domestic technology.

The achievement was enabled by an independently developed biomass combustion technology from Longyuan Technology, allowing fuels including straw and furniture offcuts to replace part of the coal used at the facility.

The co-firing process remained stable, with key indicators including furnace temperature, emissions and unit load staying within qualified ranges.

The Qingyuan Power Plant operates four million-kW double-reheat units under integrated management and is also a National Energy Administration pilot for new power system capacity building.

The technology could replace about 142,000 tonnes of standard coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 347,000 tonnes annually.
