Nine companies from Korea, Mainland China, France and Hong Kong, including Hyundai Motor Group, have signed a landmark memorandum of understanding to help develop a citywide hydrogen ecosystem in Hong Kong, marking a major step forward in the city’s green transition.

Signed at the International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2026 on May 18, the agreement outlines plans to build a self-sustaining hydrogen industry chain by 2030, covering production, storage, transportation, refuelling and utilisation. The partnership will focus on converting landfill gas into clean hydrogen energy, while also advancing liquefied hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and deploying hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles, including airport shuttles and tour buses.

Backed by InvestHK, the collaboration also aims to position Hong Kong as a strategic hub for Hyundai Motor Group’s hydrogen expansion across the Asia-Pacific region. The initiative aligns with Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050 and broader efforts to accelerate low-carbon innovation and regional green development.
