[China Thrills] Chongqing’s Dazu District Lights Up for Spring Festival

Dazu District in Chongqing, southwest China, has been illuminated by a vibrant lantern show as it welcomes the upcoming Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, which falls on February 17.

Drawing on local cultural heritage, the display features lanterns inspired by the district’s renowned stone carvings, begonia flowers and traditional fire dragons, enhanced by modern lighting technologies. A standout attraction is a three-tier lotus lantern standing 10 metres tall at Hongsheng Plaza, while Xiangguo Park hosts a series of giant, cartoon-style lantern installations. Along major streets, trees are adorned with neon light tubes and rows of small red lanterns, creating a festive night-time spectacle.

Local resident Dai Yongming praised the display, saying the “immersive experience with the new lighting technology is amazing”. According to local authorities, the lantern show will remain open to the public until after the Lantern Festival on March 3.
