This golden autumn, old shipways and vintage tower cranes meet light-and-shadow art on an island. The 18th Shanghai International Photographic Art Exhibition is held at Shipyard Park on Fuxing Island, showcasing nearly 300 works by over 230 artists and photographers from 23 countries and regions around the world.
As the only inland island in the Huangpu River, Fuxing Island carries the deep memories of a modern shipbuilding industry. Its former shipway workshops, protectively revitalized, offer a singular narrative stage for photographic art. Works by international masters including Cristina De Middle, current president of Magnum Photos, are on view, where visual languages from different cultures meet and converse. During the exhibition, the Belarusian Photographic Society sent a dedicated delegation to exhibit and visit, holding symposiums on photographic art and making the exhibition a key platform for dialogue among photographers worldwide.
Marking the exhibition's 40th anniversary, this edition features two special themed shows that use photographic fragments to guide audiences through four decades of photographic technology, illuminating photography's past and present. A photography enthusiast and his wife paused before the exhibits. Reflecting on the interplay of old and new images, he said: "Photography has changed tremendously. Early photographic techniques were precious, and the old photos that survive carry a generation's youth. Today many works use technology to rework old photos and bring nostalgic memories back to life — that in itself is a new kind of creation, and it's fascinating."
