[China Travelogue] Ruby Strings: Red Jade Vine Blooms in Guangzhou
: :

In a greenhouse at the South China Botanical Garden in Guangzhou, more than ten clusters of red jade vine (Mucuna bennettii) have burst into scarlet bloom. In the sunlight, each blossom resembles a string of rubies or a row of tiny birds perched along the vine, creating a blazing, almost theatrical sight.

The vine, native to rainforests from Indonesia to New Guinea, was introduced from Yunnan Province in 2019. After six years of careful cultivation by the garden’s staff, it has flowered for the first time this year.

In Guangzhou, the red jade vine is currently on display only at this botanical garden, and warmer days are helping it open more quickly. As word has spread, curious visitors have come to see the rare spectacle.

Visitors to the greenhouse describe the flowers as a once-in-a-season wonder, and many leave with photos and smiles.
