Sayram Lake in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is entering its winter transformation, as falling temperatures trigger the gradual freeze of its vast surface. Nearly half of the alpine lake is now blanketed by drifting ice floes that sparkle under the winter sun.

Seen from above, Sayram Lake presents a striking contrast: crystal-blue open water on one side, gleaming white ice on the other, forming a natural canvas of colour and texture. Along the shoreline, a dramatic phenomenon known as “ice push” is unfolding. Before the lake freezes completely, winds drive broken ice toward the banks, where the shards stack and compress into layered ridges.

This short-lived icy spectacle is expected to last several days, offering visitors a rare glimpse of Sayram Lake’s seasonal beauty at the threshold of winter.
