[China Travelogue] Huangpi Lake Enters Peak Season for Winter Bird Migration
: :

Huangpi Lake Wetland in Hefei, east China’s Anhui Province, is entering its peak winter migration period, marked by the annual “bird wave” phenomenon. Large flocks of migratory birds gather over the lake, moving in coordinated formations that are most visible during early morning and late afternoon.

Viewed from a distance, the flocks form broad, shifting shapes as they pass over the water and sky, creating a striking natural scene. The clear winter conditions and low-angle sunlight provide ideal visibility for observing these movements.

Huangpi Lake is a key stopover along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, with its main birdwatching season running from late November to February. By December 2025, more than 100,000 wintering birds from 137 species had been recorded, making the wetland a bustling haven for avian life and a visual focus for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
