[China Travelogue] Birds of Prey Return to Beijing as Wildlife Thrives

Beijing’s outskirts are witnessing a remarkable return of birds of prey, thrilling photographers and bird enthusiasts alike. Last winter and this spring, golden eagles and white-tailed eagles were spotted with unusual frequency, drawing crowds eager to capture rare images.

In Fangshan district, dozens of enthusiasts lined the roadside to photograph the majestic golden eagles. “Species such as the golden eagle and white-tailed sea eagle were traditionally believed to inhabit only the remote, deep forests of the Greater Khingan Mountains… Seeing them in Beijing is truly unexpected,” said Yang Gensuo, a photographer from Heilongjiang Province.

At Pinggu district’s Xiyu Reservoir, over a dozen white-tailed eagles became the focus of nearly 100 cameras. “They were hovering in the sky… Capturing this entire scene sparked cheers and excitement among many of our shutterbugs,” recalled photographer Duan Zheng.

Experts attribute the growing sightings to improved ecological conditions and reduced human disturbance, a promising sign for urban wildlife in Beijing.
