[China Travelogue] West Lake's Mandarin Duck Boom
: :

Hangzhou's West Lake has become a paradise for mandarin ducks, captivating visitors and locals alike. This season brought special joy when volunteers spotted two newly hatched ducklings—the latest recorded birth in the lake's history.

The fluffy pair stayed close to their mother on sun-warmed stone steps. Despite this summer's intense heat, volunteers confirmed the ducklings are thriving. Unlike adults, hatchlings lack waterproof feathers, making them more sensitive to cold than heat. The warm weather actually accelerates their growth, and the clever ducklings already seek shade under lotus leaves.

West Lake's flourishing ecosystem has made 2024 a record year: 259 ducklings from 32 broods—the highest count ever. Early hatchlings have already taken their first flights, showcasing the habitat's health.

For devoted volunteers, these ducks are like family. Witnessing their growth in an improving environment brings immeasurable pride and happiness.
