[Cultural China] Zhuhai’s Dragon Boat Fever: Racing Home to Tradition
: :

As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, waterways across China come alive with excitement. In Zhuhai's Hongqi Town, 14 teams recently battled in a heart-pounding 400m race, their synchronized paddles slicing through the water to roaring crowds.

Twelve paddlers per boat moved as one, driven by pounding drums as their dragon-headed vessels streaked like arrows. Onshore, vibrant dragon dances, lion performances, and folk songs amplified the energy, blending sport with cultural celebration.

The race unfolded in a historic Tanka village—Zhuhai’s iconic ‘Land of Fish and Rice’. But the true magic lies in its homecoming spirit: overseas Chinese and former villagers return yearly, making this more than a competition—it’s a cherished reunion with their roots.
