A landmark grotto art exhibition will open at the Guangzhou Art Museum in Guangzhou, southern China. The event brings together fine art treasures from Dunhuang, an ancient Silk Road city in northwest China. It showcases the integration and splendor of Silk Road civilizations in Guangzhou, a vital hub along the historic Maritime Silk Road.
The exhibition features seven full-scale, high-precision grotto replicas, more than 150 newly created artworks, and immersive digital interactive experiences. It also promotes the preservation and revitalization of the traditional gold-cutting craft, bringing Dunhuang art from remote desert regions to downtown Guangzhou. The exhibition presents rarely seen murals, painted sculptures, and exclusive restoration findings from the Dunhuang Academy. Valuable relics such as ancient scriptures, textiles, stone carvings, and ceremonial objects are also on display.
Spanning 2,778 square meters, this is the museum’s largest and best-funded themed exhibition in recent years. Representing the overland and maritime Silk Roads respectively, Dunhuang and Guangzhou create a profound cultural dialogue between Silk Road heritage and Lingnan culture. The exhibition also achieves key breakthroughs in academic reproduction, authentic artifact display, and digital interaction.
