[Cultural China] Honoring Mazu: Macao's Cultural Bridge
: :

Mazu, a revered deity in Chinese mythology and the guardian of seafarers, is deeply cherished by coastal communities across China. In Macao, the largest temple dedicated to her is located on Dieshitang Hill in Coloane, covering approximately 7,000 square meters. The Macao Mazu Cultural Tourism Festival has become a celebrated annual event on the local calendar.

This year’s festival opened with a grand ceremony and traditional rites at the Tianhou Temple, attended by nearly a thousand distinguished guests from around the world. The event featured special cultural performances by the Fujian Opera Theater and the Quanzhou Cultural and Tourism Bureau, including mesmerizing dragon and lion dances, as well as traditional choreography that brought to life the evolution and cultural depth of the Mazu legend.

The four-day celebration also showcased intangible cultural heritage exhibitions, blessing processions, and spectacular themed galas. Through this shared cultural heritage, the festival served as a bridge for enhancing cultural exchange and tourism cooperation among Macao, mainland China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asian communities.
