A devoted Tibetan medicine practitioner is helping revitalise traditional healing while expanding healthcare access in the remote highlands of Qinghai. In Nangqian County, Yushu Prefecture, Gengque Mulan has become widely respected for his dedication. After completing university in 2006, he returned home to serve pastoral communities where vast distances and limited medical facilities make treatment hard to reach. He often travels long routes to offer free consultations, driven by compassion and a deep belief in preserving tradition.

Seeing the shortage of trained rural practitioners, Mulan founded the Yushu Tibetan Medicine Vocational School in 2011. What began in makeshift tents has grown into a fully equipped, publicly funded but privately operated campus with dormitories and a cafeteria. Rooted in the ancient Four Medical Tantras, the school teaches centuries-old knowledge while preparing students to meet modern needs. “Every student receives education about love and responsibility,” he said, ensuring no one is turned away for lack of funds. All tuition and accommodation remain free. 

So far, 618 graduates have emerged, many returning to their communities as doctors, pharmacists, and clinic founders.
