[Cultural China] Horsemen Clash on Snow in Xinjiang’s Traditional Sheep-Grabbing Game

Hooves thundered across the snow as riders leaned low to seize a sheep, and a roar of cheers rose around them. In Urumqi, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of northwest China, competitors urged their mounts into fierce action, hooves sending up sprays of white as crowds watched the high-adrenaline contest.

The two-day event featured seven teams testing strength, courage, and horsemanship in the traditional game known locally as buzkashi. Riders galloped, jostled, and coordinated to wrest the animal free, turning raw power and riding skill into a fast, tense spectacle that blends athleticism with local ritual.

Long held at festivals and gatherings across the grasslands, the game is prized for its dramatic, danger-filled play and its role in preserving equestrian traditions and community spirit. Spectators left buzzing from the thrills and the vivid display of regional culture.
