Siyin Miao is a distinctive branch of the Miao ethnic group in Guizhou Province. Their traditional embroidery records the clan’s migration history through intricate patterns, and the craft—marked by its complex production process—is recognized as provincial intangible cultural heritage.
Two years ago, Mr. Gao returned to his hometown of Zhaoguan Village in Guiyang to start a business. He took over the village’s Siyin Miao Cultural and Creative Center, embarking on a path to preserve the heritage while developing cultural products. Starting from scratch, he led his team to create over 30 cultural products while also taking on embroidery orders from across the country. Today, embroidery machines run at full speed in their production base, producing finely crafted pieces adorned with traditional ethnic patterns. These efforts have brought Siyin Miao products to the national market, while also creating more job opportunities for local villagers.
Mr. Gao says his next step is to partner with more apparel companies to bring Siyin Miao embroidery from traditional ethnic attire into the modern fashion market. He also plans to upgrade the intangible cultural heritage exhibition space to better preserve and promote Siyin Miao culture and its history.
