[Cultural China] Guangzhou Sun Yat-sen Statue Restored for His 160th Birth Anniversary
: :

This year marks the 160th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's birth. The bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and its pedestal—an iconic feature of Guangzhou's Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall—have reopened to visitors after a month-long restoration.

Completed in 1931, the pedestal is 95 years old. Standing 6.3 meters tall and covering about 115 square meters, it is built entirely of granite and inlaid with a white marble slab bearing the full text of Dr. Sun's Fundamentals of National Reconstruction, incised in gilded intaglio lettering. The bronze statue atop it was recast in 1988 after the original by sculptor Yin Jichang. The restoration preserved the relic's original state, using meticulous techniques—stone cleaning, crack filling, and repainting—to remove signs of aging and restore its luster.

As a distinguished statesman of the late Qing dynasty and the founder of the Republic of China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen is widely revered as the "Father of the Nation." Chinese communities worldwide will host a series of commemorative events throughout the year to honor this monumental pioneer of China's democratic revolution.
