[Cultural China] The Enduring Legacy of the Guzheng
: :

The guzheng, one of China’s oldest and most beloved traditional instruments, has enchanted listeners for more than 2,500 years with its elegant sound and expressive style. Originating during the Warring States Period, it was once performed mainly in royal courts before gradually becoming part of everyday cultural life across China.

Modern guzhengs usually feature 21 strings stretched across a long wooden body, allowing musicians to create flowing melodies, delicate harmonies and powerful emotional expression. Performers wear special finger picks to pluck the strings, producing the instrument’s distinctive bright and resonant tone.

Over centuries, the guzheng evolved alongside Chinese society, adapting in design, materials and playing techniques while preserving its traditional character. Its influence also spread across Asia, inspiring instruments such as Japan’s koto and Korea’s gayageum. Today, the guzheng remains a celebrated symbol of Chinese musical heritage, connecting ancient artistry with modern audiences around the world.
