Guangdong Province is accelerating its ambition to become a global hub for international medical services, as China steps up efforts to expand its service sector and attract overseas patients.
A joint initiative launched in late March by nine government departments, including the Ministry of Commerce, is driving the push. The plan aims to boost inbound tourism spending and strengthen exports of healthcare services.
At the forefront is the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, one of Guangdong’s designated pilot sites. The hospital is improving patient experience by streamlining processes from diagnosis to payment, reducing waiting times and enhancing overall care.
Its ability to perform complex procedures such as aortic aneurysm surgeries, using a combination of international expertise and domestically developed devices, is drawing patients from around the world. Competitive costs and high safety standards further add to its appeal.
Supported by partnerships with leading institutions such as Harvard University, Guangdong is also advancing AI driven healthcare innovation, positioning itself as a leading destination for high quality and accessible medical care.
