Nestled in downtown Guangzhou, a major metropolis in southern China, Zhujiang Park serves as a serene urban oasis. Its abundant birdlife has made it a beloved gathering spot for photography enthusiasts, who often spend an entire day capturing images of its feathered residents and visitors.
The park is home to a remarkable array of avian species. More than 130 wild bird species have been documented with photographic evidence, including resident birds, winter migrants, summer migrants, and transit species. At peak times, over a dozen species can be spotted in a single day. Guided by a bird-friendly philosophy, the park has established a core ecological protection area to support local wildlife.
Park staff have taken concrete steps to sustain the bird population. They have planted berry-producing species such as iron holly, autumn maple, and winter glory. The park also protects ecological wetlands to enrich fish and amphibian populations, creating a natural food source for birds. Additionally, artificial bird nests have been installed to further improve their habitat.
