Hengqin Port is set to significantly enhance cross border travel between Macau and Hengqin, with an expansion project expected to almost double its daily passenger handling capacity to around 220,000 trips when completed in the third quarter of 2026.
The upgrade will increase the number of immigration channels to 113, including 47 joint facial recognition e-gates that enable travellers to complete clearance for both sides in a single process. The improvements are expected to shorten waiting times during peak periods by about 45 percent.
Demand at the port continues to rise. In the first quarter of 2026, Hengqin Port handled more than 9 million passenger trips and over 1 million vehicle crossings. The port also reached 10 million passenger crossings for the year on 9 April, nearly a month earlier than in 2025.
The expansion will support growing travel demand and make daily journeys more convenient for the more than 30,000 Macau residents living and working in the Guangdong Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.
