[Global Connect] HK Rescue Services and Dogs Honoured for Myanmar Earthquake Response

Hong Kong’s Fire Services rescue dogs are proving to be real heroes, both at home and abroad. The HKSAR Search and Rescue Team, featuring two springer spaniels, Umi and Twix, was recently honoured with the Chief Executive’s Award for Exemplary Performance for their vital role in earthquake relief efforts in Myanmar earlier this year.

Their overseas success is more than just recognition, it’s a crucial investment into Hong Kong’s own emergency preparedness and growing capability to provide foreign assistance. Trained to international standards, these dogs accelerate rescue missions by alerting teams when victims are found. These overseas missions strengthen adaptability and sharpen disaster response, saving precious time during emergencies like floods or building collapses.

Umi, one of the first working dogs bred and trained locally through a Fire Services and Customs partnership, represents the future of local rescue dogs. Twix, already a veteran, assisted in the Anderson Road tower crane collapse in 2022.

To develop their skills further, the Fire Services Canine Unit plan to continue training in Yunnan later this year, ensuring Hong Kong stays ready for any crisis, both foreign and domestic.
