On September 3, 2026, media leaders, senior journalists and online influencers from APEC economies visited the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in Zhuhai, south China’s Guangdong Province.

The 55-kilometer bridge connects Hong Kong with Zhuhai and Macao. Since opening in 2018, it has reduced travel time between the three cities from about three hours to around 45 minutes.

At Blue Dolphin Island, the media were impressed by the landmark infrastructure project. Andrew Drummond, editor of Australian Associated Press, called the bridge “spectacular,” describing it as “not only an engineering marvel, but also a remarkable achievement.”

John Wallace, director of Australian Asia-Pacific Journalism Center, said the large-scale project shows advanced technology and engineering capabilities, while reflecting a goal of bringing the region closer together.

From January to July 2026, the bridge port recorded 238 billion yuan in imports and exports, over 39% year on year. Cross-border e-commerce exports reached 88 billion yuan, with nearly 3 million parcels shipped daily to more than 200 countries and regions.

Felix Paz, general director of the Peruvian news agency Andina, said the bridge shows an important level of technological development and expressed hope to learn from China’s experience in improving regional connectivity.
