[Green Highlights] Kai Tak Sports Park Turns Waste into Growth with Composting Systems
: :

Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) is redefining its role beyond being Hong Kong’s premier destination for sports and concerts – it is also emerging as a showcase for the city’s green economy. With a comprehensive sustainability framework in place, the Park is championing a plastic-free culture and setting new benchmarks for resource conservation and waste reduction.

A robust waste recycling system is central to this effort. Ambassadors stationed throughout the venue guide visitors on proper recycling, while strategically placed bins across the Park collect common recyclables. These materials are processed through KTSP’s large-scale decomposition system, which transforms waste into compost for landscaping within the grounds.

Another waste breakdown system further converts food waste, cups, and paper containers into fertiliser. Together, these systems are expected to handle more than 200 tons of waste each year, reducing nearly 85 percent of solid waste into water vapour and compost – a self-sustaining micro-cycle.

Complementing these initiatives, KTSP also uses biodegradable utensils, compostable packaging, and has partnered with local green enterprise Baguio to recycle plastic bottles into food-grade plastic for remanufacturing.
