Shenzhen has recorded 459 bird species, highlighting the city’s growing biodiversity and long-term commitment to wildlife protection.
The newly released bird list, compiled from historical records and more than 30 years of observations by residents and birdwatching enthusiasts, includes around 10 newly recorded species added last year. Many of these discoveries were captured through photographs taken by local bird lovers in the wild.
As a key stopover along migratory routes, Shenzhen welcomes more than 100,000 migratory birds every winter and serves as an important wintering habitat for the endangered black-faced spoonbill.
The city has strengthened its conservation efforts in recent years, including introducing regulations in 2014 that designated Shenzhen as a citywide no-hunting and no-fishing zone, helping protect its diverse ecosystems and wildlife.
