Hong Kong has strengthened its position as an international innovation and technology (I&T) centre, with its global ranking rising one place to 14th among 139 economies in the Global Innovation Index 2026.

The progress comes as the city advances the I&T priorities set out in its First Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development, which aims to establish Hong Kong as an international I&T centre based in the Greater Bay Area, serving the country and connecting to the world after 2030.

Hong Kong remained fifth in Asia, while its Innovation Input ranking held at eighth globally and its Innovation Output ranking rose one place to 21st.

Under the Five-Year Plan, the city will strengthen its I&T institutional framework, develop three major I&T parks and five key research institutions, and advance new industrialisation. It will also expand AI adoption, computing infrastructure and support for businesses.

Hong Kong will further deepen cooperation with the Mainland and global partners to attract I&T resources and talent.
