[HK Thrills] Hong Kong Retains Top Spot in Global Economic Freedom

Hong Kong has retained its position as the world’s freest economy, according to the Economic Freedom of the World 2026 Annual Report published by the Fraser Institute, a Canadian think tank.

The city ranked first for freedom to trade internationally and second for regulatory standards among the report’s five core assessment areas, highlighting its open and business-friendly economic environment.

The HKSAR government welcomed the findings, saying they reaffirm Hong Kong’s strong free-market foundations, supported by an open, efficient and fair business ecosystem.

Despite global economic uncertainties and rising trade protectionism, Hong Kong remains committed to maintaining its free port status, zero-tariff regime and simple, low-tax structure.

Officials also highlighted the benefits of the Chinese mainland’s economic growth and technological development, which have supported Hong Kong while the city continues to maintain extensive global connections.

They said the city’s first Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development, along with major infrastructure projects such as the Northern Metropolis, is expected to create further economic and social opportunities.
