Elderly care in China is being redefined by digital innovation, as AI-driven pilot programs begin to enhance quality of life and promote independent living among seniors.
In Wuzhen, a new smart elderly care centre is demonstrating how technology can support aging with dignity. Residents wear ID badges that track their daily movements, while sensors above beds monitor sleep quality, heart rate, and breathing in real time.
Zhong Yueying, head of the Wuzhen Intelligent Elderly Care Centre, said the data helps caregivers better understand each resident’s health and needs.
Experts see immense potential in such advancements. “In the future of elderly care, some jobs that need direct contact can’t be done by AI, but other supportive work can,” said Professor Luo Shougui of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in an interview with a Chinese news outlet. Luo added that up to 60 percent of care-related tasks could eventually be automated.
