Guangzhou is accelerating its shift towards cleaner transport, expanding the use of hydrogen across multiple sectors as part of a broader push for greener energy solutions.
The city now operates more than 4,000 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, the highest total in China, with adoption spreading from logistics to construction. At some worksites, hydrogen powers entire fleets, including heavy-duty trucks that outperform diesel counterparts with greater load capacity, stronger performance and lower emissions.
Hydrogen is also proving efficient for cold-chain logistics, where trucks can refuel in five to ten minutes and travel up to 500 kilometres, improving both speed and cost-effectiveness.
Growing demand is helping to drive prices down. Some refuelling stations now offer hydrogen at 25.9 yuan per kilogram, close to the national target of below 25 yuan by 2030.
Supporting this expansion, a major hydrogen fuel cell supply centre with an annual capacity of 5,100 tonnes has been launched, strengthening supply across the region.
