Rare migratory birds have been sighted on Mazhou Island in east China’s Jiangsu Province, where scientific cameras recently captured striking images of two nationally protected species: the Ciconia boyciana and the black-faced spoonbill. Footage shows the Ciconia boyciana, distinguished by its white plumage and black bill and wings, wandering calmly along the shoreline. Nearby, a black-faced spoonbill, or Platalea minor, can be seen by the water’s edge, using its long, flat beak to gracefully preen its feathers. Experts say both species are pausing in Jiangsu to replenish their energy during migration. They are expected to remain on Mazhou Island for another week or two before continuing their journey, offering a rare and encouraging glimpse of the region’s flourishing ecological environment.
