This autumn, Hong Kong’s hidden film sets are opening their doors to the public. Running from October 1 to November 30, “Heritage Fiesta 2025” will offer free guided tours of 10 historic landmarks – many usually closed to visitors – that have doubled as backdrops for some of the city’s most memorable movies. Among the highlights is the Tung Wah Coffin Home, a declared monument and winner of the 2005 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award, recently seen in The Last Dance (2024). Movie buffs can also step into University Hall at the University of Hong Kong, which featured in films such as Mack the Knife (1995), City of Glass (1998), and Integrity (2019). Other cinematic gems include the Bridges Street Centre of the Chinese YMCA, known from Running on Karma (2003), and St. Stephen’s College, which set the scene for Echoes of the Rainbow (2010). With each stop, visitors can rediscover the city’s cinematic past through its architectural treasures, revealing how deeply Hong Kong’s heritage and cinema are intertwined.
