[Green Tech] China Accelerates Breakthroughs in Forestry Breeding
: :

China has made significant progress in forestry breeding over the past five years, advancing high-quality tree varieties to support major ecological initiatives. The Ministry of Natural Resources said precision in selecting superior varieties has surpassed 70 per cent, driven by breakthroughs in gene-editing, full-genome selection systems and sustained research into new species.

Researchers have developed 67 improved varieties for key timber species, while more than 110 stress-resistant types have been bred to meet the demands of afforestation in arid, nutrient-poor regions across the northeast, north and northwest of China. These enhanced species now make up around 85 per cent of seedlings used in major ecological programmes, with applications across 33,000 hectares and wider benefits extending over 133,000 hectares.

Looking ahead, experts say the toughest work remains in areas with harsh conditions. As Wang Yangdong of the Chinese Academy of Forestry noted, challenges lie in lands that require varieties able to withstand “drought” and “salinity”, essential for expanding greenery and strengthening global ecosystems.
