[China Thrills] Style-It-Yourself Clay Pony Becomes Year of Horse Hit
: :

As the Spring Festival approaches and the Year of the Horse draws near, a Chinese zodiac–themed clay doll from the Shandong Provincial Art Museum has emerged as an unexpected favourite. The toy, known as “Ma Biaobiao”, or whimsy pony, has gained popularity for its unruly hairstyle and endearing expression.

Inspired by a painting by renowned Chinese artist Qi Baishi, the clay pony features minimalist black eyes, a galloping pose and a deliberately unkempt woollen mane. Owners are encouraged to style the mane themselves, turning each doll into a one-of-a-kind creation and making the buying experience more interactive.

Visitors say the appeal lies in its freedom and personality. One described how they could style it “any way I like”, adding that “even when it’s messy, it is still adorable”.

According to the museum, the pony blends artistic heritage with emotional charm, reimagining the zodiac horse as playful, expressive and engaging.
