Xiamen, a coastal city in east China’s Fujian Province where the average annual temperature hovers around 20 degrees Celsius, is bringing winter to life through new technologies and innovative approaches that defy seasonal limits.
An indoor ice and snow resort has become a major draw, featuring winding, crystal-clear ice slides, cosy igloos and softly falling snowflakes. Spanning about 15,000 square metres, it houses Fujian’s largest indoor ski area alongside zones for snow tubing and snow cycling. Since last December, the resort has welcomed more than 30,000 visitors.
The winter experience extends outdoors. In late January, an ice and snow park opened after artificial snow-making transformed an idle water park into a 20,000-square-metre winter playground with snow houses, slides and family-friendly activity zones. Ten snow-making machines run continuously, each producing about 35 cubic metres of snow daily.
As one staff member put it, “The ice and snow economy is booming this year.” Visitor numbers exceeded 50,000 in the first week alone, with up to half a million expected this season.
