Several vibrant lantern shows have illuminated Xiamen, a coastal city in east China’s Fujian Province, ushering in a festive mood ahead of the upcoming Spring Festival, which falls on February 17 this year.

At the Xiamen Horticulture Expo Garden, a large-scale lantern display presents nine themed sections, ranging from Spring Festival celebrations to classic Chinese mythological stories. A total of 31 lantern groups combine light, colour and design to create an immersive nighttime spectacle for both residents and visitors.

Meanwhile, Fangte Theme Park has become another popular destination, featuring a striking 16-metre-high lantern tower that has drawn steady flows of visitors. Some attendees have embraced traditional dress to enhance the experience, with one visitor saying, “We all wear Hanfu here… it’s also very interactive.”

This year’s Spring Festival marks the start of the Year of the Horse, a time traditionally associated with family reunions and hopes for good fortune in the year ahead.
