Seafood sales are picking up pace at markets across east China’s Qingdao City as the Chinese New Year draws near, with residents stocking up on fresh ingredients for festive meals.
In Laoshan District, local markets were already bustling from early morning, as shoppers sought out traditional holiday staples for family reunions. Seafood has been especially popular, with locally made sweet-cured fish, offered in more than a dozen varieties, proving a favourite for many households.
“People living by the sea all love this fish,” said local resident Wang Songyang, noting the plentiful supply of monkfish and squid.
Vendors say prices have remained largely stable compared with last year, helping sustain strong demand. “The prices of other fish are basically the same,” said seller Zhao Chun, who now sells up to 250 kilograms a day, despite a modest rise in mackerel prices.
Fresh catches such as pomfret and yellow croaker are also in high demand as families prepare for the Spring Festival on 17 February.
