[China Thrills] World's First 100,000-Ton Salmon Farming Vessel Begins First Commercial Harvest in China

China's Su Hai 1, the world's first 100,000-ton salmon farming vessel, has begun its first commercial salmon harvest off the coast of Weihai, Shandong Province. The vessel officially entered service in late 2025, carrying salmon fry raised on land.

The fry were loaded aboard in December 2025 after undergoing standardized cultivation and salinity acclimatization. The vessel initially operated in the East China Sea before moving north to the Yellow Sea as seawater temperatures rose, enabling enclosed deep-sea farming under optimal conditions. After six months of carefully managed cultivation, the salmon reached market size, marking the vessel's maiden commercial harvest.

As the world's first self-propelled enclosed salmon farming vessel, Su Hai 1 integrates fish farming, harvesting, and primary processing. Measuring 249.8 meters in length and equipped with 15 breeding tanks holding a total of 83,000 cubic meters of seawater, it is expected to produce 6,000 to 8,000 tons of salmon annually under stable operating conditions.
