[Cultural China] Ancient Loom, Modern Appeal: Chengdu Museum's Success
: :

Tired of the usual blockbuster museums? This summer, smaller, hands-on cultural venues are stealing the spotlight — and the Chengdu Shu Brocade and Embroidery Museum is a prime example. It is the country’s only institution that showcases the entire handmade production process of Shu brocade.

The star of the show is a delicate, dragon-patterned wooden loom dating back to the Qing Dynasty, with Cao Daiwu — the recognized inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Shu brocade — demonstrating traditional weaving techniques.

During the summer, the museum offers workshops where guests of all ages can try their hand at crafting Shu brocade. It has also launched a series of creatively designed souvenirs, from limited-edition Shu brocade-themed coffee cups to silk scarves adorned with panda motifs. These innovations have driven nearly twice as many visitors and a threefold increase in souvenir sales compared to the same period last year.

“It’s the perfect blend of ancient heritage and modern appeal.” the museum’s director said. Moving forward, the museum will continue to develop engaging, experiential programs that make cultural discovery not just enlightening — but also exciting.
