More than 500 first graders at a primary school in Baise, Guangxi dressed in Hanfu to take part in a First Writing Ceremony, a traditional initiation rite that let the children feel China’s cultural heritage as they begin school.
With eager faces they walked through the “Gate of Enlightenment”, straightened robes and caps, and received a cinnabar dot on the forehead from teachers meant to bless clear eyes and bright minds. At the ceremony’s peak, guided by teachers, the children dipped brushes into ink and practiced the first strokes of the character “person”, learning the lesson of proper conduct as they started their studies.
Parents said watching their children bow, concentrate and write made them feel the students’ growth. Many described the rite as deeply meaningful, a memorable way to open the path of learning.
