Zhaoxing Dong Village in southwest China’s Guizhou Province came alive as the Dong ethnic group celebrated their New Year with music, colour and community spirit.
The festivities took place in China’s largest and most iconic Dong village, renowned for its well-preserved wooden houses, towering drum towers and deep-rooted cultural traditions. Dong New Year, a festival centred on harvest and reunion, has been recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage since 2011.
A highlight of the celebration was the final round of the Lusheng contest, featuring 25 teams from Guizhou and neighbouring Guangxi. Across 97 matches, performers competed to showcase the strongest sounds, finest skills and best ensemble performances using the traditional bamboo reed-pipe instrument.
A grand parade along the village’s main street brought together more than 500 participants. They displayed traditional costumes, musical instruments and festive foods, while creative fashion pieces blended ancient wax-dye techniques with modern designs. Visitors were also invited to join the lively “Duoye” folk dance, adding to the joyful and inclusive atmosphere.
