For more than a century, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has played a significant role in the city’s educational and cultural development. Founded in 1911 as Hong Kong’s first university, HKU was established to provide Western-style education for the local Chinese community while welcoming students from across Asia.
Set within the historic landscape of Pok Fu Lam, the HKU campus contains more historic buildings than any other tertiary institution in Hong Kong. Its terraced layout, interconnected courtyards, stairways and open spaces reflect the relationship between architecture and the surrounding natural environment.
In 2022, the Commissioner for Heritage’s Office, the Antiquities and Monuments Office and HKU launched the “HKU Heritage Sights and Sites” audio guide programme. The initiative highlights 13 declared monuments and historic buildings across two clusters on and around the campus, allowing visitors to explore their architectural features and historical significance.
The trail also connects with the Dr Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail, further linking HKU’s heritage to Hong Kong’s wider history.
