A new exhibition in Hong Kong is bringing to life the stories of young people who travelled to Yan’an during the War of Resistance, drawn by a shared determination to support the fight against Japanese aggression.

“Youth Heading to Yan’an: Patriotic Youth During the War of Resistance” opens on August 28 at the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence and runs until July 7, 2027. Admission is free.

For the first time, around 24 sets of revolutionary relics from three cultural institutions in Shaanxi Province are being shown in Hong Kong. Among them is a 1940 graduation certificate from the Anti-Japanese Military and Political University, alongside a bugle used by the Eighth Route Army, offering tangible glimpses into the people and institutions at the heart of the wartime movement.

The exhibition also explores the close wartime links between Yan’an and Hong Kong through five local artefacts and more than 90 photographs. Interactive displays and multimedia features invite visitors to discover Yan’an’s history, while a programme of talks, workshops, screenings and performances will further explore its wartime legacy.
