Giant panda twins You You and Jiu Jiu made their debut on Monday at the brand-new panda pavilion of Guangzhou Zoo, adding a fresh wave of excitement as the city gears up to host the 15th National Games.

Born in Madrid in September 2021, the brothers – whose names together symbolise “lasting friendship” between China and Spain – returned to China last year with their parents, settling first at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding before arriving in Guangzhou on September 16.

The long-awaited unveiling drew panda fans from across the country. Breeders say the twins have quickly adapted to their new home, developing distinct personalities. “In a word, they have a very good relationship,” Deng Tao, a breeder from the Chengdu Research Base, told a Chinese news outlet.

Covering more than 3,800 square metres, the new panda pavilion blends seamlessly with the zoo’s lush surroundings and features indoor and outdoor spaces, climbing structures, pools, and natural greenery.
