The main towers of the world’s largest-span double-deck suspension bridge have been topped out at the Shiziyang Passageway, a major transport link in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The project has now moved into the next stage of upper-structure work. The east and west main towers stand in Dongguan and Nansha in Guangzhou, each rising to 342 metres—about the height of a 110-storey skyscraper.
Once completed, the bridge, with a main span of 2,180 metres, is expected to set multiple world records and help advance China’s technology for ultra-large-span suspension bridges.
The 35-kilometre Shiziyang Passageway links Nansha District in Guangzhou with Shatian and Humen in Dongguan. When it opens, it is expected to ease traffic pressure on the Humen Bridge and Nansha Bridge and bring the two sides of the Pearl River closer together.
