Unit 2 of the Taipingling nuclear power project in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, was successfully connected to the grid on Saturday, marking another milestone for clean energy development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
The project is the first nuclear power plant in the Greater Bay Area to use Hualong One, China's domestically developed third generation nuclear reactor technology. Following the commercial operation of Unit 1 in April, Unit 2 will now undergo a series of performance tests before entering commercial operation in the second half of 2026.
Once operational, Unit 2 is expected to generate more than 9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, providing enough power to support the annual needs of nearly one million people.
Construction of Unit 2 began in October 2020, with digital and intelligent technologies incorporated throughout the project. Taipingling is planned to include six Hualong One units, which together are expected to produce more than 55 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
