[GBA Thrills] Zhuhai Mangrove Carbon Sink Project Eyes Global Market
: :

The signing ceremony for the Zhuhai Jinwan Mangrove Cross-Border Development Cooperation was recently held in Zhuhai, drawing nearly 100 government representatives, experts, scholars, and business leaders from Macao, Portuguese-speaking countries, and mainland China.

The project is based on 236 hectares of mangrove resources in Pingsha Wetland Park, Jinwan District, Zhuhai. Preliminary assessments indicate the potential to generate over 90,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in carbon sinks annually, with an estimated economic value of RMB 20 million.

Under the cooperation agreement, the parties will jointly conduct research on carbon sink methodologies, promote alignment with international standards, and develop cross-border trading mechanisms, creating a pathway to convert ecological assets into internationally tradable value.

Representatives from Macao noted that, as a gateway between China, Portuguese-speaking countries, and global markets, Macao holds unique advantages in green finance and carbon trading, and will be able to showcase the measurable, verifiable, and tradable carbon value of mangroves to the world.

The collaboration is expected to establish an internationally compliant framework that enables global companies to participate in blue carbon trading in the Greater Bay Area, achieving a win-win outcome for both ecological and economic benefits.
