[GBA Thrills] Amaryllis Blooms: Beauty, Fortune, and Global Appeal
[GBA Thrills] Amaryllis Blooms: Beauty, Fortune, and Global Appeal
: :

The South China National Botanical Garden in Guangzhou recently held an amaryllis flower exhibition, featuring nearly 400 varieties displayed in about 800 pots inside its greenhouse. The flowers are strikingly large, measuring 15–20 cm in diameter, and come in a rich palette of red, pink, orange, white, and multicolored gradients. Their elegant forms—single, double, and butterfly-shaped blooms—are a feast for the eyes. The garden has long been committed to the introduction, conservation, and breeding of amaryllis, and all these varieties are newly developed cultivars.

Amaryllis belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and, like daffodils, was first discovered in the 16th century in Brazil and Peru. It has since been cultivated into more than 3,000 varieties, making it a beloved favorite in global horticulture.

Beyond its beauty, the flower also resonates with a homophone in Chinese, symbolizing luck and prosperity. Attendees of the Canton Fair made special trips to the exhibition, hoping to share in the good fortune and wishing for their businesses to “blossom” around the world.
