As May arrives, lychees—the signature fruit of Lingnan—begin to ripen, and many parts of Guangdong are entering the harvest season. Leading the way is the “May Red” variety grown in Zhongshan.
In a century-old orchard in Zhongshan, clusters of ruby-like lychees hang heavily from the branches, creating a mouthwatering scene. Compared with other varieties, May Red ripens earlier. This year, it matured about ten days ahead of schedule, featuring thin skin, thick flesh, and a pleasantly sweet-and-tart flavor that becomes even better when chilled.
According to local growers, this year is an “off year” for lychees, with lower yields expected across the region. Surprisingly, however, May Red has ripened ahead of time, maintaining a daily harvest of around 1,500 kilograms. Due to reduced output, prices are expected to rise. Lychee lovers are encouraged to buy and enjoy them early while supplies last.
