[GBA Thrills] Guangdong – China’s Business Powerhouse in Five Years
: :

China’s largest provincial economy, Guangdong, is not just planning for the future, it is trying to build the blueprint for China’s next economic leap.

The southern province has unveiled its 15th Five-Year Plan, covering development from 2026 to 2030, and the message is clear: Guangdong wants to become one of the world’s most competitive business hubs.

At the centre of the strategy is the Greater Bay Area, linking cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong into a world-class economic cluster.

Guangdong is targeting annual economic growth of around 5 percent, while also increasing investment into research and development at a similar pace. But this is not just about growing bigger. Guangdong wants to lead in the industries shaping the future.

The province is doubling down on areas like 6G, advanced nuclear energy, cell and gene therapy, deep-sea exploration, robotics and smart electric vehicles. Officials are also encouraging companies to commercialise these technologies, turning scientific breakthroughs into profitable industries that can compete globally.

Guangdong is already strong in renewable energy, robotics and the low-altitude economy, including drones and aerial transport. Now it wants to transform these sectors into industrial clusters worth billions, even trillions, of yuan. Long known as the world’s factory, Guangdong now wants to develop into a global hub for smart manufacturing. And unlike many tech transitions, Guangdong says traditional industries will not be left behind.

Sectors like clothing, furniture and home appliances are expected to receive support to digitise operations and integrate artificial intelligence into manufacturing.

The plan also focuses heavily on investing in people. Guangdong wants stronger employment, higher incomes, better healthcare and improved elderly care as life expectancy continues to rise.

By 2030, Guangdong aims to raise life expectancy to over 81 years while continuing to improve living standards alongside economic growth.

And all of this development is meant to happen with sustainability in mind. Guangdong is pushing for greener growth as it expands its industrial base.

The province already has momentum behind it. Its economy reached 14 trillion yuan between 2021 and 2025, while its foreign trade remained number one in China for a 40th consecutive year.
