A spectacular dragon boat marathon took place in Foshan, south China’s Guangdong Province recently, drawing thousands of paddlers from across the country. They competed on a single 30-kilometer water course in a test of both endurance and speed.
At the starting signal, more than 280 boats darted off the line across Foshan’s Jili River, oars churning the water into spray and kicking off a vibrant, wide-open race. The 30-kilometer marathon is the largest five-person dragon boat event in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, with entries in the open category up 45 percent year on year.
Paddlers navigated turnarounds and jockeyed for position, racing neck and neck in a tense, thrilling contest. Spectators lining both banks of the river cheered with great enthusiasm.
Ms. Lu / Visitor:
"This dragon boat race is so lively. It feels like a big, joyful celebration for everyone. It’s amazing to see so many people gathered here. The most folk-style events are always the most fun and bustling."
Ms. Lo / Visitor from Hong Kong:
"There are dragon boat races in many places across the Greater Bay Area, including Hong Kong and Foshan. Dragon boat racing is a great activity for boosting exchanges within the bay area. It also does a good job bringing people together and fostering a spirit of unity and progress."
