Dubai hosted the world’s first Hong Kong dragon boat event of 2026, with the fourth Hong Kong Dragon Boat Challenge held at Dubai Creek on 24 and 25 January.

The two-day event brought together more than 1,500 competitors from diverse nationalities, with a record 62 teams competing. For the first time, teams from all seven emirates of the UAE took part, adding to the event’s inclusive and international atmosphere. Joint teams formed by members of the Hong Kong and Chinese communities in the UAE also joined the races.

Beyond the on-water action, the programme featured lively cultural performances, lion dances and popular Hong Kong street flavours, from milk tea and pineapple buns to curry fish balls and dim sum, drawing long queues throughout the weekend. Promotional booths also introduced visitors to Hong Kong’s tourism highlights.

At the awards ceremony, organisers highlighted that dragon boat racing is “more than a competition”, noting its symbolism of “strength, resilience, friendship, and unity”. Winning teams will be invited to race in Hong Kong later this year, extending the spirit of the event beyond Dubai.
